Choices For Communities:
Wastewater Management Options For Rural Communities

If your community leaders believe that centralized sewer is the only avenue for increased development and prosperity, yet the costs are overwhelming, then read on!

This publication by North Carolina State University discusses the need for a comprehensive strategy for the timely and cost-effective treatment of municipal wastewater, especially in rural areas. Many community officials are not aware of the many options that exist between individual septic systems and traditional "centralized" sewage treatment systems. These alternative options, collectively termed a "decentralized" approach to wastewater management, are discussed. This publication looks at cost comparisons between the two approaches and gives examples of projects in North Carolina communities. The importance of management, maintenance, and inspections for the decentralized approach is also stressed.
