Nominations will be accepted through December 18, 2009 for the S.C. Environmental Awareness Award. Now in its 18th year, this award was established in 1992 by the S.C. General Assembly to recognize South Carolinians for outstanding contributions made toward the protection, conservation and improvement of South Carolina’s natural resources.

Each year the public is invited to submit nominations that are then reviewed by an awards committee, which includes representatives from the state’s environmental and natural resource agencies. In judging nominees, the committee considers excellence in innovation, leadership and accomplishments that influence positive changes affecting the natural environment.

On December 1, 2009, DHEC will be hosting a Community Meeting on the Lee County Landfill. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Lee Central High School at 1800 Wisacky Highway in Bishopville.

At this meeting citizens will hear about what has been done at the landfill since the last DHEC Meeting held in March. Citizens will also be able to participate in a discussion with staff about the air quality. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions.
