The Southside Middle Afterschool Dance and Gardening Club promote physical activity through dance and gardening. They record physical activity sessions that are used to encourage movement. The students also learn about healthy food choices and all aspects of gardening. They have planted carrots, collards and herbs. Raised beds are used to allow participation of all students. Some of the students started a worm compost for the garden. Tasting events are held to sample the foods from the garden.

The Five Oaks Academy Organic gardening program teaches students all aspects of gardening. They grow herbs and make infused oils for cooking projects. They also use them to sell as a fundraiser for the organic garden. The garden is used in each class to teach students about plants, the environment and nutrition. The produce is used for the student’s food preparation class and healthy snacks for their after school program. Students helped to build a greenhouse and a solar fan system to assist them with gardening year-round.

The Healthy Fitness Zone Project focuses students strengthening their bodies through various physical activities such as the climbing wall, disc golf and walking. They are encouraged to walk to school and use the walking trail daily. The students also learn about nutrition by eating from the rainbow and creating a colorful plate. A committee was formed with school faculty, parents, students and the town of Springdale to transform their playground into a Healthy Fitness Zone for the school and community. The vision is to create an environment that is safe and available to all.

The Strength Summed Up Team promote the use of weights and various aerobic exercises to increase strength and endurance. Community partners work with the students to insure the proper exercise and weight lifting techniques. They also learn about proper nutrition which includes the food groups and portion sizes. The team share their messages through performances for the school and the community.

The students run daily and utilize the work out stations along the trail to improve their cardio health. Each year a 5k run is hosted for the entire school and community. The students participate in all stages of gardening including planting, composting and cultivation. Harvested vegetables are prepared in a healthy manner and served in the school cafeteria. Events are hosted to allow some of the produce to be taken home and shared with the family.

This group uses theater to educate, entertain and inform audiences about issues that are facing our youth. The cast members are 9th-12th graders that perform throughout the state.
The cast members write scenes that cover topics such as substance abuse, teen pregnancy, eating disorders and mental health. The performance ends with lively discussion involving the audience is held after each scene.

The Healthy Food Choice program was developed after several students noticed that many students were not eating healthy lunches and a great deal of food was being wasted. The students developed a point system using healthy food choices and exercise. A monthly goal is assigned and points are tallied daily to track success. The program is a fun, creative and competitive way to encourage nutrition and physical activity. The students designed a logo and placed it above food items in the cafeteria line to indicate the healthy selections.

“Healthy me is what I want to be” is the slogan for the Healthy Me Club. The members of the club consist of 3rd-5th graders who develop and participate in a variety of physical fitness exercises. They learn about healthy eating it to others. During lunchtime, they encourage and challenge other students to select and eat more healthy foods. The club members track their eating and physical fitness habits by journaling daily. They also promote their healthy me messages by making announcements at PTA meetings and other after school events. They are also planning to perform a skit that will be presented to the entire student body and to the PTA.

Forest Heights Elementary has committed to help its students develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime. The Healthy Me! Mind, Body and Soul project focuses on developing children physically, socially and mentally. Some of the students created a nutrition video using the food pyramid as a guide they also created a physical activity video, which is used by the entire student body. The parents and students signed family and fitness fun pledges to eat smart and move more. Some of the kindergartens toured a local grocery story to learn even more about eating healthy. They also learned about healthy friendship and established Health Buddies from E.E. Taylor Elementary via podcasting, Distance Learning and face-to-face meetings.

Teaches 4th and 5th graders how to prepare simple and healthy dishes at home to share with their families. They learn what makes ingredients healthy and how to use them as substitutes in recipes. The students prepare healthy food using recipes and share with the faculty. A copy of the recipe is posted in the cafeteria and given to students to take home. Plans are underway to begin a vegetable and herb garden. Produce from the gardens will be used in the cooking club.

The club organized a Walk for Water project to raise money, which was used to buy 100 water filters that were shipped to 50 schools in Haiti. An outdoor course is being marked to promote walking outside during recess. They design and create posters to spread messages throughout the school about healthy living.

Combines the study of geography and maps with physical activity. The students choose different places on the map and calculate the number of miles it would take to walk there. Fitness stations are also set up in the gym for fitness testing. Scores are recorded for activities such as push-ups, curl-ups and jump rope. The club is also involved in volunteer activities. They adopted a polar bear and made a donation to the World Wildlife Federation.

The Columbia Chapter of Links partnered with Anna Boyd School to create a community garden. A seasoned volunteer gardener and a volunteer from Links teach the students proper planting seasons, soil preparation, and how to plant and harvest their crops. Some of the produce from their winter garden was shared with elderly residents in the neighborhood. There are plans to share some of the produce from their spring garden with Harvest Hope. They also research healthy recipes and learn how to prepare healthy meals. These recipes are shared with school faculty, staff and parents.

The 4th and 5th graders at Plantersville Elementary School in Georgetown helped to design a project called Stop the Silent Killer to educate others about the causes and effects of hypertension. They learned how eating and exercise could impact hypertension. They also learned importance of blood pressure checks. The plans are to use the information they have learned to educate the local community about this silent killer.

The Health Occupation Students at Lancaster High School created the Fight the Flu Campaign to educate and create awareness among the students, faculty and the community about seasonal and H1N1 flu. They distributed bags to student, faculty and containing information and products to help prevent or fight the flu. They conducted educational sessions to promote their message and also emphasized the flu shot, hand washing, and hand sanitizer in their flu prevention message. The students also shared their message through e-mails, posters, lunch fairs and school public service announcements.

The team participates in conditioning exercises and BMI measurements are recorded and monitored for each swimmer. The swimmers also promote the importance of health and proper nutrition by distributing information to the community.
