Early Childhood Toolkit

The Eat Smart, Move More Grow Healthy toolkit uses a three prong approach to address nutrition and physical activity by targeting children ages 3 - 5, families, and policies and practices in the child care center. The purpose of the toolkit is to provide resources that promote and support best practice recommendations for nutrition and physical activity in the child care setting.

The toolkit contains a self-assessment for child care centers, an action plan template, and 14 components which can be used to support the action plan. The Eat Smart, Move More Grow Healthy Child Care assessment is the first component and the first step in using the toolkit. The self-assessment is a quality improvement tool and by completing the assessment, child care centers directors will be able to determine how the policies, practices, and environment at their center aligns with national and state best practice recommendations.

The Eat Smart, Move More, Grow Healthy Toolkit training is available to child care centers throughout the state. Toolkit consultants have been trained and are available to provide this training to child care center directors. For additional information, contact Misty Pearson at

One set of Move More…It’s in the Cards is included in the toolkit. Each card provides instructions for a teacher planned activity that supports and encourages physical activity. A copy of the Cards can be downloaded here.
