Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) Section


The HAI Section is responsible for implementing the South Carolina Hospital Infections Disclosure Act (HIDA) to report infection rates to the public. Staff is providing public health leadership and is working with partners to develop and implement the SC HAI Prevention Plan. 

Hospital Infections Disclosure Act (HIDA):  state mandated
Collect data from the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) data base for hospital acquired infections from selected procedures and devices

    • Report individual hospital acquired risk adjusted infection rates to the public every six months
    • Publish data to allow the public to compare hospitals
    • Validate data to ensure the accuracy and completeness of reporting 
    • Submit an annual report to the General Assembly

HAI Prevention Plan:
Provide public health leadership to work with state partners to develop and implement the HAI Prevention Plan and measure targeted HAI prevention efforts by ensuring the following categories are addressed in the plans:

    1. Develop or Enhance HAI Program Infrastructure
    2. Surveillance, Detection, Reporting, and Response
    3. Prevention
    4. Evaluation, Oversight and Communication
