The Division of General Sanitation carries out many programs for the health and safety of South Carolina citizens. One of these programs, rabies control, is of particular importance because of the 100% fatality rate of the disease. Other areas of responsibility include vector control, nuisance complaints, lead poisoning prevention, and sanitation needs of mobile home parks, camps and school facilities.

The division cooperates with other state agencies in conducting sanitation and safety inspections in regulated child caring facilities. While the division has no regulatory authority in these facilities, the inspections help insure the health and safety of children.
