Health and Environmental Issues for Children Under Six

Early childhood is a time of rapid growth and numerous developmental changes. It is an exciting time when parents and caregivers protect, nurture, stimulate and observe children as they grow from babies to toddlers to preschoolers. Children's health and safety during these formative years is largely dependent on the care they receive and the environment in which they reside.

Babies and young children need special care to keep them safe and healthy. They are vulnerable to germs, pollution, injury and illness. They depend on caregivers to keep them clean and safe, to teach them good habits and to stimulate their development. People caring for children need to take special precautions to help children grow and remain safe and healthy. The pages listed here are designed to address topics relating to children's health. Each section has links to other sources of information and gives the name, E-mail address and phone number of a contact person for that topic at the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). Some sections may connect you to resources and/or materials that may be useful for teaching, assessing or evaluating young children.
