Today's Observations
There was some smoke observed this morning from the pile at the intersection of Schinger Ave and Mackinlay Way. Water was added to stop the smoke. Otherwise, water has only been used to wet the ground to help with dust. There was no runoff from the pile today due to the minimal amount of water used for firefighting.
The Okatie Elementary School sensor is currently in the “Good” range. Please refer to the interactive DHEC map to access real time air quality information.

Please note: The number of trucks leaving the site each day varies depending on the weather and firefighting activities. Also, the tons per truck are estimated on days when landfill receipts are not available at the time of this update.
Smoke forecast for Wednesday, September 11, 2019:
Winds should be light and variable early this afternoon, then winds should blow from the east with a chance of afternoon showers. Winds should become light and variable after sunset, which would shift the plume in any direction at any given time, but highest smoke concentrations are expected to be in close proximity of the fire, within about 1/4 mile of the facility. Beyond mid-morning hours (through sunset) each day, any remnant smoke in the air should disperse efficiently. Any significant smoke during morning hours will likely be transported towards the northwest early, then shifting towards the southwest late in the day at speeds from 5 to 10 mph. Thus, the area near the Brooke Mill and Abberly Chase apartment complexes and points south are more likely to witness smoke during the morning hours if fire flare-ups occur. Smoke is not expected to be a problem during the afternoon hours each day. Please note that locations closest to the Able Contracting facility along Schinger Avenue are more likely to experience smoke at any given time.
