There was smoke coming from the site this morning, but it died down as the day went on. Fire trucks have been used to spray the pile down for the majority of the day today.
The Okatie Elementary School sensor is currently in the “Good” range. Please refer to the interactive DHEC map to access real time air quality information. Note the Sun City sensor was not transmitting; staff has responded and we hope to have it back online soon.

Please note: The number of trucks leaving the site each day varies depending on the weather and firefighting activities. Also, the tons per truck are estimated on days when landfill receipts are not available at the time of this update.
There were 131 trucks leaving the site yesterday, removing a total of 1221 tons of material.
Smoke forecast through Monday, September 16, 2019:
Winds should be consistent from the east to northeast after sunset, which would shift the plume towards the southwest. The highest smoke concentrations are expected to be in close proximity of the fire, especially within about ¼ mile of the facility. Beyond mid-morning hours (through sunset) each day, any remnant smoke in the air should disperse efficiently. For Saturday through Monday, any significant smoke during the morning hours of each day will likely be transported towards the west and southwest, with periods of low cloudiness in the morning and a chance of showers and thundershowers in the afternoon. Winds should be from the E-NE at 5-10 mph Saturday through Sunday, and up to 15 mph on Monday. Thus, portions of the Sun City subdivision are more likely to witness smoke during the morning hours if fire flare-ups occur. Smoke is not expected to be a problem during the afternoon hours each day. Please note that locations closest to the Able Contracting facility along Schinger Avenue are more likely to experience smoke at any given time.
