An early morning fire on the surface of the pile was extinguished with assistance from Jasper County. As a result of smoke from this fire, the sensor closest to the site detected more smoke than has been present in recent days, but the levels are still in the “good” Air Quality Index (AQI) category.
All three DHEC sensors, including the ones located at Okatie Elementary School and Sun City, are currently in the “Good” range for the 24-hour averages.

Please note: The number of trucks leaving the site each day varies depending on the weather and firefighting activities. Also, the tons per truck are estimated on days when landfill receipts are not available at the time of this update.
Smoke forecast for Wednesday, September 25, 2019:
Although there has been a slight uptick in the particulate concentrations in the local area of the fire due to a weak frontal boundary increasing regional particulate levels, air quality monitoring data shows particulate concentrations mainly in the "good" range to low "moderate" immediately adjacent to the site. Good and low moderate particulate levels are considered to be healthy for all individuals. If fire flare-ups do occur, a light southerly wind will likely move smoke plumes towards the north on Wednesday. Any noticeable smoke during the overnight and early morning period will likely dissipate by the late morning hours. However, given the latest trends in fire activity and continued fire suppression efforts, smoke is not expected to be a problem beyond locations closest to the Able Contracting facility along Schinger Avenue.
