Counsel to the Director
Austin Smith serves as counsel to the director of DHEC with a focus on process improvement and agency operations. Prior to joining the DHEC staff in 2012, he served as deputy director of Labor for the S.C. Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.
The Greenville native holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a law degree from the University of South Carolina, where he was also a U.S.C. Board of Trustees Scholar.
Prior to law school, he worked as a policy advisor in the office of Governor Mark Sanford, focusing on environmental, agricultural and transportation issues. Immediately following his graduation from law school, Smith worked in private practice representing businesses and individuals in civil litigation.
