DHEC Update – TB Investigation, Greenwood County
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has provided the following update to the tuberculosis (TB) investigation in Greenwood County:
- This investigation has been going on since March 8, inside and outside of the school, as it relates to the contacts of the Index.
Since its inception, many individuals with a relationship to the 2 (two) infectious patients (other than those in the school) have been tested - and found to carry the germ. However, in the entire investigation - inside and outside of the school - there are still only two infectious people identified thus far in the community, and both are affiliated with the school.
- As of this update, the testing totals (associated with the school) stand as follows:
Total number of TB skin tests = 603 (112 non-students, 491 students),
Total number of positive TB skin test results = 74 (19 non-students, 55 students),
Total number of abnormal chest X-ray readings = 12 (2 non-students, 10 students).
- Since March 8, as part of DHEC’s ongoing investigation, the following information reflects additional testing and results obtained thus far:
Total number of TB skin tests = 501,
Total number of positive TB skin test results = 25,
Total number of abnormal chest x-ray readings = 1*.
*The one (1) abnormal chest x-ray was identified as an extrapulmonary case of TB, and had been medically determined to be non-infectious.
Information resulting from this investigation will be provided as it is confirmed, and in accordance with state and federal law.
