Reminder of Able Contracting Information Hotline

The Able Contracting Information Hotline phone number is 803-898-4262 or 1-800-204-1842.

If you have questions about what is going on at the site, DHEC has a 1-800 phone number that people may call. The message contains the daily smoke forecast and allows you to leave a message at the end.  A member of DHEC’s staff will return calls from these messages. Please be sure to leave a call back number if you would like a return call. Your feedback is important to our daily updates.

Air Quality in the entire area, including Okatie Elementary School, is “Good” today.

Total Trucks through 8/25 461
Total Tons through 8/25 4,387
Trucks as of 3:00 PM 8/26 50
Tons as of 3:00 PM 8/26 500

Please note: The number of trucks leaving the site each day varies depending on the weather and firefighting activities. Also, the tons per truck are estimated on days when landfill receipts are not available at the time of this update.

Water Generated by Firefighting Activities

Strategies to reduce the amount of fire-fighting water traveling off-site continue to be implemented.  Due to the increased efficiency of water use, the amount of water utilized on-site continues to decrease as does the amount of runoff.  Fire-fighting water that is captured continues to be shipped directly in vacuum trucks to a sanitary sewage system where it is treated.

Smoke forecast for Tuesday, August 27, 2019:

A light easterly wind this evening will likely shift to a northeasterly direction by early morning Tuesday, which should shift the Able fire smoke plume generally toward the southwest during that time. Overnight smoke trapping will remain rather minimal, but light wind speeds may allow smoke concentrations to increase during the overnight to early morning period. Before and just after sunrise, there is a possibility of smoke to the southwest of the Able facility, particularly near the Sun City community and between the 1500 and 2500 blocks of Argent Blvd. Beyond mid-morning on Tuesday, ample vertical mixing should disperse the smoke plume as winds shift more from the southeast direction during the afternoon. Please note that locations closest to the Able Contracting Recycling facility along Schinger Avenue are more likely to experience smoke at any given time.

The Able Contracting Information Hotline  has been established to provide the daily forecast and allow community members to leave messages if they have additional questions. The Smoke Forecast Hotline phone number is 803-898-4262 or 1-800‐204-1842.
