At various times during the year, DHEC conducts water sampling at the pump station after treatment and along the distribution line. We also oversee compliance of the EPA Lead and Copper Rule.
DHEC works with public water systems to keep our drinking water safe. The agency emphasizes prevention of contamination through source water protection and provides technical assistance and education.
Routine System Monitoring
Each year by July 1, your water supplier should make available a Consumer Confidence Report (CCR), also known as an annual drinking water quality report. Your CCR tells you where your water comes from and lists the regulated contaminants the water system detected in treated water and the level at which they were found for the preceding calendar year. Because of the number of citizens served, the City of Denmark Public Water System is required to publish notice of its CCR in a local newspaper and make the CCR report available upon request at City Hall.
DHEC conducts routine monitoring on all public water systems in accordance with EPA's standard monitoring schedule. The results for Denmark's water system can be found on DHEC's Drinking Water Watch page.
On February 23, 2018, DHEC conducted a sanitary system inspection on the public water system serving the City of Denmark. The intent of the sanitary survey is to evaluate the public water system's ability to provide a continuous supply of safe drinking water to its customers. The City of Denmark received an overall rating of "Needs Improvement" for operational procedures and storage tank maintenance. This rating is not related to water quality but to equipment maintenance that if not corrected could lead to water quality issues. DHEC is working with the City of Denmark to address these concerns promptly.
School Water Sampling
DHEC coordinated with the Bamberg District Two school district to conduct water sampling for lead levels as requested at the community meeting which DHEC hosted on April 5, 2018. DHEC staff collected samples at Denmark-Olar Elementary School on April 12, 2018, and Denmark-Olar Middle School on April 19, 2018.
All results from both schools were below the EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule action level of 0.015 milligrams per liter (mg/L).
DHEC Partnership Well Sampling Study
- All 3 partners sampled together and had similar results.
- All results meet or exceed EPA safe drinking water standards.
In response to concerns expressed by some customers during a SC Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) community meeting on April 5, 2018, the agency agreed to work collaboratively with statewide partners to perform a special sampling study of the water quality of the four public wells serving the City of Denmark.
This study incorporated independent analysis of samples of untreated (raw) water and treated water collected at the well house of each of the four public wells: Cox Mill, Voorhees, Acacia Street, and West Voorhees. Each sample from each location was analyzed for pH, bacteria, chlorine residual, lead, iron, and manganese.
The University of South Carolina Department of Chemistry (USC) and The Edisto Riverkeeper (with the support of the SC Rural Water Association) joined DHEC as partners in the study. Partners collected samples at the same locations and times but used independent laboratories to perform analysis and prepared independent reports for comparison.
Key Findings of the DHEC study were:
- The pH was within guidelines from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), close to neutral and less likely to be corrosive.
- No samples from any well detected a measurable concentration of lead.
- There was no evidence of bacteria, and chlorine residuals in treated water indicated that water treatment is effective.
- All levels of iron and manganese in the raw and treated water from wells were below the standards set by the EPA.
- Based on DHEC State Lab results, no regulatory actions are necessary.
