Radioactive Material: Licensing and Compliance

The State of South Carolina has an agreement with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to regulate the use of radioactive material in South Carolina.

Under the agreement, DHEC's Division of Radioactive Material Licensing and Compliance licenses and inspects more than 900 licensees: approximately 600 general licensees and 325 specific radioactive material licensees.

In all, there are 24 categories of radioactive material license.

Who Uses Radiological Materials?

The healthcare field uses radioactive materials to diagnose and treat health conditions.

Industry uses radioactive materials to sterilize products, measure the level and density of various construction materials, and for other purposes.

All these facilities must use radioactive material in accordance with S.C. Regulation 61-63, Radioactive Materials (Title A).

Emergency Response Team

DHEC is also responsible for maintaining an emergency response team capable of responding to any incident involving radioactive material.
