Making Connections Between Your Health and Environment
Environmental Public Health Tracking (EPHT) is a nationally integrated environmental and public health information system that provides access to data and information people can use to make informed decisions about health issues arising from, or directly related to, environmental factors.
The purpose of EPHT is to make environmental and public health information more accessible and to monitor trends over time. Tracking health and environmental data over time can help identify patterns and trends leading to interventions, policy change and development to improve public health and protect communities.
Links between environmental exposures and specific diseases have been documented. One example is the association between exposure to asbestos and lung cancer. Another example is exposure to lead and decreased mental function in children. Both of these instances have motivated policy change in order to protect public health.
